Sports news:

Jacoby Ellsbury seems to spend more time on the disabled list than actually playing baseball. He parlayed a couple of outstanding seasons with the Red Sox into a long-term contract with the Yankees.

Give him the credit for making the Yankees look very foolish. If Ellsbury  is fortunate , might play in 100 games this year.

Yankees OF Elsbury to open season on DL

New York Yankees outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury will start the season on the disabled list after being sidelined with an oblique injury for much of spring training.

Manager Aaron Boone said earlier in the week he expected as much.

Ellsbury has gone 1-for-12 in five games this spring, but will stay behind at the Yankees spring training complex as the club departs for its final preseason game in Atlanta before opening the regular season Thursday in Toronto.

Ellsbury was scheduled to take simulated batting practice on Monday and perhaps get an at-bat or two in Tuesday’s spring training game against the Detroit Tigers but those plans were scrapped after he developed flu-like symptoms.

Ellsbury, 34, has been plagued by injuries the past few seasons and is slated to be a backup this season with Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge and Brett Gardner serving as the starters. Aaron Hicks is the team’s fourth outfielder.

Last season, Ellsbury batted .264 with seven homers, 39 RBIs and 22 steals in 112 games. In four seasons with New York, he is batting .264 with 39 homers, 198 RBIs and 102 steals.

Ellsbury played his first six-plus seasons with the Boston Red Sox before signing a seven-year, $153 million deal with the Yankees following the 2013 campaign.
