Diesel presents Whiskey Row, a collection blended by AJ Fernandez and developed partnership with Rabbit Hole Bourbon, a maverick new distillery making its mark on the bourbon category. Diesel Whiskey Row features a three-region blend of Nicaraguan tobaccos from Ometepe, Condega and Jalapa, each aged 5 to 8 years, and enveloped in the bourbon-barrel-aged Mexican Binder. The entire blend is wrapped in Ecuadorian Habano which is aged five years.
I could go on and tell you more from the press release but as this is my cigar review, will report on my findings. Appearance/Construction: Diesel Whiskey Row is a solid cigar with lots of mass. It looks big even though it is a robusto. Semi oily feel with tight construction. Medium brown wrapper, good-looking in appearance. I liked the cigar bands look but it was quite an effort to remove the bands without damaging the cigar. Small veins but not an issue.
Flavor/Taste and Aroma: Immediately was greeted with a strong shot of pepper , quite spicy. Needed to hold on to my chair. This smoke is geared I think to the experienced cigar smoker who likes their products with a kick.
First Third: Pepper taste receded somewhat and was greeted with a woody taste that must be bourbon influenced. The cigar toned down a bit and a very pleasant and interesting maple flavor hit my palate. I liked this a lot and was a real plus to the overall flavor.
Second Third: The consistency of the smoke is quite smooth as the maple cranked down the intensity even further. My palate craved the complex nature of this AJ Fernandez production. It is now medium in strength.
Final Third: This cigar is built for the long run. Each flavor was amply profiled with each of them taking turns throughout the cigar. Well crafted and tasty.
Smoking Characteristics: Very solid in all aspects including burn, draw, and the even nature of the ash which was dark grey.
Conclusion/Overall Impression: Diesel cigars are built for the every day smoker who likes a flavorful smoke without a price point that would kill you. The Diesel Whiskey Row is a very welcome addition to the overall line and also for the experienced cigar dude.
Final Thoughts and the Numbers: This is a very good cigar from the folks of General Cigars and the stable of AJ. Fernandez. Create a space in your humidor for this blend.
