Cigar review: Don Jorge Cigars
I was planning to sleep in this morning as I rise at 5 am for work during the week. apparently Mandi my dog was not given the notice as she started to lick my face at the 5 oclock hour. This was my cue that she : A. wanted to go out , and B. wanted to get fed. I got the message and thus my day started. As I have recently reviewed two cigars but needed the time to write them, I guess I thank Mandi for getting me up.
Some cigars are marketed everywhere. New releases from large companies, boutique releases at select B and M’s , trade shows, cigar events , the usual suspects. The cigar in question was discovered from another review I read at the Smooth Draws website. They also do a weekly radio show from Atlanta and broadcast on the net. It is a great show with industry heavies being interviewed along with the less known cigar individuals . I suggest give it a listen.
After reading their review I sent a text the owner of the brand , Nicholls Jorge, told them I plan to review his products and ordered several of them. A week later I received double the amount I purchased as a welcoming gift. It was unexpected but a great gesture. I let the smokes sit for several weeks before I sampled them. I smoked 4 of the shapes to get an idea what I was sampling. This review is only about one of the cigars. As always, my reviews are based on my subjective opinion and where and how I received the cigar does not influence my thoughts .
Cigar Review:
Brand/Name of Cigar; Don Jorge/ Habano Barberpole
Country of Origin: Combined Domican Republic and Nicaragua
Wrapper: Maduro/Habano combined
Filler: Nicaragua
Shape: Toro
Price: $5.00
Where and when smoked: Los Angeles , Ca. 6/18/17
Appearance/Construction:
Contrasting barber pole wrapper with a dry feel , no oil present. Earthy looking which indicates to me a limited production run. It does not give the appearance of being cranked out by the thousands each day. . Carefully constructed with an eye to a solid smoke.
Flavor/Taste and Aroma:
A smooth and nutty blend with a hint of caramel that sweetens the cigar. It is smooth, no bitter taste or harshness. Creamy, very flavor oriented with a subtle taste of fruit too.
Smoking characteristics:
There is a slight unraveling of the cigar during the second third but not a big deal. It stays lit throughout the entire length with a light grey ash flowing very nicely. Burned evenly for the most part and lasted about 1 hour and 15 minutes. It is a cigar not to be rushed.
Conclusion/Overall Impression:
A dynamo of a cigar which spotlights the unique skills of Jorge Nicholls. At the unheard of price of $5.00, my thought is to buy hundreds of these cigars .
Final Thoughts and the numbers:
Appearance/Construction: 3.5 out of 5
Flavor/Taste and Aroma: 4 out of 5
Smoking Characteristics: 3.5 out of 5
Conclusion/Overall Impression: 4 out 5.
It is very hard to believe there are cigars of this quality at the unheard of price of $5.00. This cigar and the others I have smoked from this batch are of top-tier quality. I gave some of my cigar buddies the different blends to try for themselves and report back to me. Give them a try , let Nicholls know you heard about his products from me and enjoy.
Keep smoking
