Scandinavian Tobacco Group has completed the purchase of Thompson and Co. of Tampa.

Thompson, the oldest mail order cigar company in the United States, sold for $62 million, Scandinavian Tobacco said in a news release.

Scandinavian Tobacco said it would pay cash when it announced the deal on Jan. 31.

Thompson, with net sales of about $100 million and about 185 employees, has a significant customer base on its websites, as well as a retail store, warehouse and call center in Tampa. The company had been owned by Robert Franzblau since 1960.

The deal strengthens the range of premium cigars offered by Scandinavian Tobacco to U.S. consumers, and brings opportunities for scale benefits in combination with Scandinavian Tobacco’s existing online cigar business, the news release said.

Scandinavian Tobacco, headquartered in Soborg, Denmark, is a leading manufacturer of cigars and traditional pipe tobacco.
