BOSTON, MA — The family of James “Whitey” Bulger is filing a wrongful-death claim against the federal government after the infamous mobster was murdered in prison last year, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The family is seeking $200 million in damages that the family says will be subject to restitution to Bulger’s victims. The family said in a statement they “believe that James Bulger was deliberately placed in harm’s way.”

Bulger was 89 when he was brought from a federal transfer center in Oklahoma to a federal prison in Hazelton, West Virginia. Within hours of arriving at the prison, he was attacked with a padlock wrapped in a sock and a shiv, suffering what was reported to be a gruesome death.

The family of Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger is filing a wrongful-death claim against the federal government on Friday, after he was last October.

At the time of his death, Bulger was serving a life sentence for 11 murders.
