Cigar review: Cohiba Royale, King or lesser Royalty?

Cigar review:  It was until this smoke, 6 weeks between cigars. I figured it was a smart bet to keep myself protected from the external nastiness of Covid-19. Why chance a lung issue if there was a way to give yourself a barrier?

Now , I did smoke the Cohiba Royale to break my cigar fast but do not plan to puff away with no regard until we get a better handle of this disease.

My choice of a cigar was the Cohiba Royale, a highly touted blend from General Cigar and Cohiba. There is always a great deal of publicity whenever Cohiba releases a new product.

Here is in part what they have to say about it. ” The artisans of Cohiba are proud to present Cohiba Royale, a super-premium collection that joins the Cohiba portfolio as the brand’s fullest-bodied expression to date. A dimensional multi-country blend with tobaccos from Nicaragua, Honduras and the Dominican Republic , Cohiba Royale provides the most profound smoking experience of the renowned Cohiba Brand.”

As always how and where I receive the cigar does not impact my subjective viewpoint. If you are interested , I suggest smoking the cigar yourself and make your own judgment.

Brand/Name of Cigar: Cohiba/ Cohiba Royale

Country of Origin: Honduras

Wrapper: Nicaragua

Binder: Dominican Piloto Cubano

Filler: Honduras Jamastran, Nicaragua from Jalapa and Esteli

Shape: Toro Royale

Price: MSRP, $28.99, I received gratis from General Cigar for review

Where and When Smoked: Los Angeles, Ca. 4/26/2020

Appearance/Construction:  The Royale has the distinct look of royalty with a dark, brown, wrapper, nice construction with a firm touch. A very good looking cigar. The band also adds another classy dimension to the overall look.

Flavor/Taste and Aroma:  First Third: The cigar sets the pace with of strong combo of medium spice, roasted nuts and a chewy whiskey barrel flavor as if it was stored in an old, oak cask. No harshness or difficulty for the smoke.

Second Third: The cigar mellowed down a bit as the spice was not as strong as the first third. I also received a nutmeg influence.

Final Third: We now felt a blast of black spice with an intensity I did not expect. Actually this was not enjoyable and made the blend overpowering to my taste.

Smoking Chararcteristics: The cigar was very solid in overall construction with no issues. This was a strong point in the overall look at the cigar.

Conclusion/Overall Impression: This cigar did not quite live up to my expectations that I was hoping for. The uneven flavor at the end of the smoke created a feeling of wanting to hurry up and finish the cigar.

Final Thoughts and the Numbers: I don’t try to listen to the hype that any cigar brings to the market. As I make my own opinion about what I smoke, this was not a top rated cigar.

There will always be someone who would like this blend as a special event type cigar as the price point is pretty hefty. I would put my cash some other cigar if the I needed a intense, special cigar.
