Add the annual InterTabac trade show to the growing list of trade shows to be cancelled this year in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hosted by Messe Dortmund, the 2020 InterTabac trade show and exposition was to be held in Dortmund, Germany, from Sept. 18-20. InterTabac is the world’s largest tobacco trade show and encompasses all segments of the tobacco industry. Previously, the Tobacconists’ Association of America cancelled its convention, which was to be held in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, from March 22-26; and earlier this month, the Premium Cigar Association cancelled the 2020 PCA trade show and convention, which was to be held in Las Vegas from July 10-14.
News of the cancellation comes just two weeks after Messe Dortmund confirmed plans to hold the trade show. After making that announcement, Messe Dortmund surveyed exhibitors about their willingness to participate in the trade show—many of them expressed worries and hesitation about coming to InterTabac because of health concerns and global travel restrictions. Armed with this information, Messe Dortmund made the decision to cancel the 2020 InterTabac trade show.
“Given this feedback from the industry, holding InterTabac in its customary form was not something that could reasonably be expected of the organizer, Messe Dortmund, or of exhibitors, visitors or others involved in the fair,” Messe Dortmund stated in an official press release announcing the cancellation.
While the 2020 InterTabac trade show has been cancelled, Messe Dortmund is working to organize an alternative format that will be held in the Fall. No details of that alternative format or dates have yet to be released. The 2021 InterTabac trade show is planned for Sept. 16-18.
