Cigar review: From the vault

Cigar review: I was going through the website and looking at several older reviews. This one struck me as such a good smoke, it’s worth repeating the review and perhaps letting other cigar smokers in the loop to  try this blend and company.

CIGAR REVIEW: XURVIVOR AMERICANO 2018, STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER

How do you drive a person to a new cigar company?  What must a company do to make their products known to the public? Is it getting a major magazine to feature their smoke, a celebrity endorsement or something more modest?

Each company must decide how much time, money and effort it will take to make the cigar denizens to  notice and smoke a cigar they are unfamiliar with.

Several weeks ago, I “discovered” Xurvivor cigars on-line and reached out to them about their brand. They were very cordial to my request to receive press releases and send cigars for review.

I also had several questions to ask them about their brand, what drives the company and why they are different. These questions and responses will be part of this article after my review. My questions are not softballs but direct , thought-provoking and the answers  received were well thought out.

As stated, I received the cigar for review gratis from Xurvivor Cigars but as always how and where I receive the cigars does not impact my subjective opinion.  Please smoke the cigar yourself and make up your own mind.

Brand/Name of Cigar: Xurvivor/Americano 2018

Country of Origin: United States, Ybor City, Florida

Size: 6.5 x 54

Wrapper: Maduro

Binder: Ecuador

Filler: Nicaragua/Dominican Republic

Shape: Toro

Price: $15.50 Single

Where and When Smoked: Los Angeles, Ca. 6/24/18

Appearance/Construction: I wanted to stand up and salute this cigar.  The construction is strong and powerful with a dark brown wrapper, generally smooth with small veins present. No obvious construction issues. Cigar band is attractive and large to make a point.

This cigar is hand rolled in the United States with all the bands, sleeves etc. sourced here too. This is worth a mention.

Flavor/Taste and Aroma:

First third: Was eye opening in a good way. Very nice combo of cashews, mint and chocolate. Nothing overwhelming but all the flavors seem to complement each other very well.

Second third: All three flavors were enhanced as we smoked further. Not a spicy cigar but a smooth presence was how it tasted. A little taste of vanilla hit the palate but not a strong contender to the other three.

Final third: Give me this blend all day. No surprises thrown at you as you smoked. Consistent and smooth. Not a spicy cigar for those who want a blast.

Smoking Characteristics: No complaints about the burn as it was true , stayed lit and created no ill will towards the cigar.

Conclusion/Overall Impression:

This is a humdinger of a cigar ( can I use that word ? ) with a totally enjoyable smoking experience. A very well crafted smoke and clicking on all cyclinders. If you are looking for a spicy blend this is not it. Price point might be steep for some, but reach in your pocket and make the purchase.

Final Thoughts and the Numbers:

You are hereby commanded to try this cigar immediately for a great smoking experience. As many of you know, maduro cigars are not always on my list of cigars to smoke but the Xurvivor Americano 2018 is.

Appearance/Construction: 4 out of 5

Flavor/Taste and Aroma: 4.2 out 5

Smoking Characteristics: 4 out 5

Conclusion/Overall Impression: 4.1 out of 5

Inteview coming up with the Xurvivor  Cigar team

Q. What makes your cigars different  from other boutique cigar companies in this crowded market?

     A. We promote quality over quantity and focus on creating new and exciting limited edition cigars. We are also very proud to say we source all materials we can locally within the USA. Stickers, boxes, sleeves, everything you see we always try to buy American.
Q.  How do you bring awareness about your brand to cigar smokers ?
     A. We are heavily active in social media and engage our customers on a daily basis. We love using Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest to promote our brand using our #xurvivorcigars hashtag and high-quality photography. We also write customer-driven, educational, cigar-related articles in the Ask Xurvivor section of our website. We try to write about topics that are interesting to our customers or about questions we receive regularly.
Q.  What is the most difficult process you have encountered in defining your brand ?
     A. Balancing pricing and volume. As we have experienced significant growth over the last few years, our goal has been to experiment and create more blends and flavor profiles.
Q.  What has your reception been when cigar smokers try out your cigars?
     A. We are here to offer some of the finest cigars in the world and challenge the status quo. Some well-known cigars have been around for over a century and have been the pillar of the cigar world for over 50 years. We started this company wanting to share Ybor City with the world. The response has been overwhelming to say the least. Our push for quality, dedication, and customer service has been extremely well-received from day one. We constantly receive emails from our customers that appreciate what we do.  The secret to our success has been our ability to incorporate our customer’s feedback over the years to improve our blends and services.  From the quality of our cigars all the way to our hand-written notes we send with our orders, we feel privileged to have been welcomed into the cigar world.   The most exciting part of being in this industry is being able to connect with cigar lovers from all over the world.
