Cigar smoking is a hobby that has been enjoyed for centuries, and one of the key aspects of the experience is pairing cigars with the right beverage. Whether you’re a seasoned cigar aficionado or a beginner, finding the perfect match for your cigar can enhance your overall smoking experience and make your cigar just a little bit more memorable. In this blog, we’ll explore some of the best ways to pair cigars and drinks and provide you with tips for finding the perfect match.

Before we dive into the pairing recommendations, it’s important to note that there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to pairing cigars and drinks – just guidelines. Personal preference is key, and what works for one person might not work for another. Generally,  there are two schools of thought – complimentary (the pairing flavors build on each other) and contrasting (the pairing flavors highlight each other).  With that in mind, let’s explore some of the most popular cigar and drink pairings.

Coffee

Coffee is the classic pairing for cigars, and the two go hand in hand. The bitterness of coffee can complement the sweetness of some cigars, and the two can create a harmonious balance of flavors. A strong cup of espresso pairs well with a full-bodied cigar, while a lighter roast can pair well with a milder cigar. There is no better cigar then your first cigar of the day with a double espresso. Try a ADVentura Queen’s Pearls with your next cup of joe!

Rum

Rum is a popular choice for cigar pairing, particularly for those who enjoy the sweeter, more tropical flavors of cigars. This spirit is the most common pairing in tobacco growing regions. The sweetness of rum can complement the flavors of many cigars, particularly those with notes of vanilla, caramel, or spice. A dark, full-bodied rum can pair well with a full-bodied cigar, while a lighter rum can pair well with a milder cigar. Our suggested pairing? Diplomática with a Crux Epicure.

Gin

Gin might not be the first drink that comes to mind when you think of cigar pairing, but it can be a surprisingly good match. The herbal, botanical flavors of gin can complement the earthy, smoky flavors of some cigars, particularly those with notes of cedar or leather. A classic gin and tonic can pair well with a milder cigar, while a gin martini can pair well with a full-bodied cigar. Try pairing a Davidoff Grand Cru with your next gin and tonic!

Whiskey

Whiskey is a classic pairing for cigars, and for good reason. The rich, smoky flavor of whiskey complements the bold flavors of many cigars, and the two work together to create a complex, enjoyable experience. The sweetness of bourbon can also balance out the bitterness of some cigars. One of my own personal pairings is a CLE Habano and Weller Antique 107!

Beer

Beer might not be the first drink that comes to mind when you think of cigar pairing, but it can be a great match. The carbonation in beer can help cleanse your palate between puffs, and the variety of flavors in beer means there’s a style for every cigar. Lighter beers like pilsners pair well with mild cigars, while darker beers like stouts pair well with full-bodied cigars. If you are looking for a rich experience, pair a Guinness with a Camacho Triple Maduro.

Cognac

Cognac is a type of brandy that pairs well with cigars due to its rich, complex flavor. The sweetness of cognac can balance out the bitterness of some cigars, and the two work together to create a luxurious, indulgent experience. If you want a truly luxurious pairing, pour a Louis Xiii with your next Davidoff Royal!

In conclusion, pairing cigars and drinks is an enjoyable and increasingly personal experience. Experimenting with different pairings can help you discover your own preferences and enhance your overall cigar smoking experience. No matter what beverage you prefer, there’s a perfect match out there waiting for you. Give it a try and let us know your favorite pairings!
