Not sure if this is a trend or what, but a new local restaurant named Mr. Charlie’s has established their brand in Brentwood. It’s a vegan concept of McDonald’s with a similar design with ketchy twists such as a frowny logo , hamburgers called not a hamburger . How they got around the similarity of the McDonald’s colors, design, idea is hard to figure out, but , hey, all I wanted to do is to try their food.
My food partner and I , sampled the Not a Cheeseburger selection with included fries, and a Diet Coke. Understand this is not meat but a non meat product.
Here are our thoughts as we both agreed on all the points.
- Cute place with a homey atmosphere. Good for kids and families but the food area is tight but has two spots for outdoor dining.
- It is pricy for a fast food concept but was willing to try it out as we both were curious about the food.
- The fries were cold and while they were tasty, cold fries do not make it. We should have asked for a new batch.
- The Not a Cheeseburger was adequate but overall it was blend with nothing to write home about. The bun that it was served on was not a quality item. Mostly it served as a placemat for the burger. Suggest trying a another type of bun to enhance the flavor and look of the product.
- Diet Coke was the real deal and other soda flavors are available.
- Service was friendly and efficient.
- The place was empty. I thought it would be crowded as it was lunch time but I think most folks do not realize it was open.
- Parking is difficult as the neighborhood is very busy.
- Two different people passed by us and wanted to know what he thought.
The verdict: The food needs work. There is nothing that would have me come back after the novelty of a vegan ” McDonalds. ”
